Events On This Day

Enemy tanker sighted in Bay of Biscay by Liberator of Coastal Command was sunk by HMS Sussex. The British Admiralty announced the loss of the trawlers HMS Bredon which was torpedoed and sunk on 8 February 1943, by U-521 off the Canary Islands and HMS Tervani which was sunk off Cape Bougaroni, Algeria by the Italian submarine Platino on 7 February 1943.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made three attacks on Dunkirk, heavy night raid on Cologne.

North Africa. In Northern Tunisia Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps attacked at many points along our front, in the south, forward elements of the British Eighth Army reached Mareth Line.

In the Mediterranean. Docks at Cagliari, Sardinia, raided by Allied air force bombers.

In Burma. Japanese transports attacked and prisoners taken in small naval action off Arakan coast.

Eighth Air Force. 65 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers bomb U-boat yards and naval base at Wilhelmshaven. Docks and surrounding areas are also hit. This mission is originally intended for Bremen but strikes Wilhelmshaven because primary target is obscured by clouds. Germans attempt air-to-air bombing by fighters aircraft and use of parachute-bombs fired by artillery.

Twelfth Air Force. General Doolittle assumes command of XII Bomber Command.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, attack docks and shipping at Bizerte after Wellingtons hit same target the previous night. Fighters hit trucks in Pichon-Ousseltia area and fly numerous reconnaissance missions. Hans-Jürgen von Arnim 5th Panzer Army opens offensive on broad front toward Bedja and Medjez el Bab.

Ninth Air Force. General Montgomery sets 20 March 1943 as D-Day for attack on Mareth Line. P-40 fighters carry out fighter-bomber missions as ground forces maintain pressure on enemy along coast and on Gabes road. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack roads and motor transport in Arram area during 26-27 February 1943.

Tenth Air Force. Dinjan based P-40 fighters hit bridge Northeast of Pinbaw, destroying a span and damaging other parts of the bridge.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Buibuining-Waipali area while a single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs airfields at Lae and Salamaua. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Gasmata, other B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping and airfields at Wewak and a single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attacks shipping in Hixon and Open Bays.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy aircraft hit Vila during 25-26 February 1943.
