Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Heavy daylight raid on Messina. Palermo bombed by night.

Russian Front. Korocha, Northeast of Byelgorod, occupied by Soviet troops.

In Australasia. Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bombers raided Dobo in Aru Island.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb docks and shipping at Sousse. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Gabes airfield, also hitting nearby marshalling yard. 2 forces of A-20 Havoc light bombers attack vehicle and troop concentration East of Faid. Fighters escort bomber missions, strafe Sened-Maknassy area and landing ground at Kebili, and fly routine reconnaissance and patrols.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack ferry installations at Messina.

Tenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Rangoon marshalling yard, wrecking locomotive shops and destroying railroad station. 3 other heavy bombers bomb runway at Mingaladon.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers pound Japanese forces in Mubo area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Dobo town area. A single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs Gasmata airfield.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy aircraft bomb Munda airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance is flown over Kiska, Agattu, and Attu. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kiska Camp area and hit water tanks. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb North Head through overcast. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers patrol over Amchitka.
