Events On This Day

Dunkirk docks and airfield at Maupertuis, Cherbourg, raided by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

North Africa. United States of America troops occupied Kasserine in Central Tunisia, in the north Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps attacks were held.

In the Mediterranean. Allied air force fighters and bombers attacked Syracuse.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces were counter-attacking at Kramatorskaya and Krasnoarmeisk in the Donetz Basin.

Eighth Air Force. 60 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers strike Kriegsmarine U-boat pens, port, and naval facilities at Brest.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Cagliari area and ships North of Capo d'Orlando. Wellingtons hit Bizerte. Fighters fly sweeps and reconnaissance, attacking ground forces at points along battle line, including Medjez el Bab area where enemy advance is being halted.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly top cover, strafing, and fighter-bomber missions against positions along Mareth Line.

Tenth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters bomb and strafe Waingmaw. Direct hits are scored on warehouse and fuel and ammunition dump.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Japanese occupied villages in Labu area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, operating individually, strafe schooner off Matiu Point and bomb Finschhafen airfield.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters join Navy aeroplanes in attack on small vessels off Vella Lavella Island. Hits are claimed on 2 vessels.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb and strafe Main Camp area. On return trip, weather aeroplane flies reconnaissance and makes bombing and strafing run on Attu and nearby barges with negative results.
