Events On This Day

Heaviest raid yet carried out on the U-boat base of Lorient by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

In Libya. The British Eighth Army in contact with enemy West of Pisida, on Tunisian frontier.

In the Mediterranean. Large-scale daylight raids on Naples and Cagliari, Sardinia, night raids on other airfield, in Sardinia.

Russian Front. Soviet troops captured Wehrmacht base of Kursk, Kramatorskaya in the Ukraine and Azov, at mouth of Don.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberator bombers made heavy attack on Rangoon.

Mr. Churchill arrived back in London.

Twelfth Air Force. Over 50 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Elmas airfield and seaplane base at Cagliari. P-38 Lightning fighters provide escort. Fighters and A-20 Havoc light bombers fly reconnaissance over large areas of East Tunisia. Fighters strafe gun batteries in Gafsa-Maknassy area.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbour at Naples, scoring direct hit on 1 vessel and hits on others.

Fifth Air Force. A single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs Dobo and Babo, while another bombs Timika and Kaukenau.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers flies weather reconnaissance over Kiska.
