Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitos bomb Cologne. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitos carry out a raid on Duisburg, 32 aircraft minelaying in the Frisians and off Brittany ports. No aircraft lost.

In the Mediterranean. Trapani in Sicily, Olbia (Sardinia), and if Castelvetrano (Sicily) bombed. Airfields of Lecce, Grottaglie and San Pancrazio (Italy) bombed.

In Australasia. American troops landed on Vangunu island, and captured Vura.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons hit Palermo and Cagliari during 1-2 July 1943. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Castelvetrano during the day. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) aircraft attack 2 vessels off West coast of Italy and fly patrols, reconnaissance, and convoy protection.

Ninth Air Force. 44th, 93d, and 389th Bomber Groups, on loan from Eighth Air Force, begin operations on 2 July 1943 to 21 August 1943 with Ninth Air Force. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Lecce, Grottaglie, and San Pancrazio Salentino. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields and surrounding area at Sciacca. P-40 fighters, escorting bombers to Sciacca, shoot down fighters and damage 1. 2 P-40 fighters are lost.

Fifth Air Force United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound defences in Kela Point area and trail near Logui. A lone B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs Salamaua area. Allied invasion force (MacKechnie Force) holds firm beachhead on Nassau Bay and makes contact with Australian forces to the North. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers again attack airfields in Rabaul.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and Navy F4U Corsair fighter bomb and strafe small vessel in Baeroko anchorage.

Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters fly 4 reconnaissance missions over Kiska and Segula. 17 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 16 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers then attack Kiska in 5 missions, 2 of them radar guided. Fires are started at several of the targets, which include Gertrude Cove, the harbour, and buildings in Main Camp area. Intense antiaircraft fire damages 3 aircraft. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on a submarine attack hit Kiska seaplane ramp after making no contact with target. 2 P-40 fighters cover troops which make unopposed landing on Rat Island.
