Hamburg and Ruhr targets also attacked.
In Australasia. Allied warships, supported by dive bombers,
bombarded Wickham Anchorage, Vangunu island, in New Georgia.
Japanese raids on Nassau Bay and Bena Bena (New Guinea). Australians
and United States forces linked up in New Guinea.
Eighth Air Force. General Devers, Commanding General European
Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA), in report
to General Arnold, praises proficiency of VIII Bomber Command
bombardiers but stresses dire need for high-altitude gunnery
training.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
2-3
of July 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF)
Wellingtons attack Olbia and Trapani. The following day, B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
hit Chilivani, Monserrato, and Alghero airfields. Fighters
hit radar station at Pula and Alghero, while B-26 Marauder
medium bombers bomb Milis and Capotera airfields. Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers hit area
around Marsala and airfields at Sciacca and Trapani.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields at Comiso. P-40 fighters
fly escort over Sicily and over Pantelleria, claiming destruction
of 1 fighters.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit the often bombed bridge at Myitnge,
knocking the South end span into the river.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields in Rabaul area and
hit Kendari airfield. Koepang is attacked by 2 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers . A lone B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bombs landing strip at Cape Gloucester.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields and antiaircraft
positions at Munda.
Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Main Camp and take photos
of Segula.
