Events On This Day

Large-scale daylight attacks by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers on Brest, Lorient, Ostend, Havre and Haarlem. In biggest night operation of the year more than 603 British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided Skoda works at Pilsen and Mannheim-Ludwigshafen 55 bombers missing.

Russian Front. Soviet troops repulsed Wehrmacht ground forces counter-attacks in the Kuban area.

Benito Mussolini decreed that Sicily and Sardinia were operational areas. Admiral Miklós Horthy, Regent of Hungary, at Adolf Hitler's Headquarters.

Eighth Air Force. 2 groups of heavy bombers, totalling 77, hit bridges, ports, and naval facilities at Lorient and Brest. Fighter opposition strong.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters strafe trucks during 15-16 April 1943 and during following day. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers bomb Djqobel el Raar and concentrations located in various wadis in battle area. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) maintains sea reconnaissance and patrols. Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb dock area at Palermo. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Oudna landing ground while P-38 Lightning fighters bomb vessels near Cape Zebib and at Cape el Ahmar.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack tanker in Catania harbour, scoring several hits on target and in surrounding area. Fighters fly sea patrol. British Eighth Army abandons attempts to force retreat from Enfidaville by quick jabs and prepares to launch full-scale assault during 19-20 April 1943.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters, bombing railroad bridge near Mogaung, score a direct hit on the target and blow up both approaches, leaving the bridge temporarily unserviceable. Later in the day the bridge near Pinbaw is demolished by direct hits. 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Rangoon marshalling yard. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Thazi rail junction, while 9 more, weathered out of Maymyo, hit rail targets in Mandalay.

Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe group of buildings East of Tengchung.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kaimana, Wewak, Madang, and Lae. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers pound shipping at Wewak, leaving 3 vessels sunk or in sinking condition. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Vila Salazar.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Kiska is bombed and strafed 13 times. A total of 13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 32 P-40 fighters, 29 P-38 Lightning fighters, and 2 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft cover targets which include installations in the Holtz Bay area and gun positions on North Head.
