Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
16-17
April 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF)
Wellingtons bomb North quay in Bizerte harbour. Shortly after
noon B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and
docks at Ferryville and Palermo. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
hit town area and marshalling yard at Mateur. Fighters provide
escort. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) Bisleys
bomb La Sebala airfield and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Ksar
Tyr and concentrations Northeast of Grich el Oued. Fighters
fly escort and reconnaissance missions. Northwest African
Coastal Air Force (NACAF) aeroplanes fly sea patrol and reconnaissance
and attack shipping in Strait of Sicily.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers (including The British Royal Air Force
(RAF) 178 Squadron, under IX Bomber Command control bomb Catania.
P-40 fighters fly sweeps, sea patrol, and fighter-bomber missions.
Tenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers bomb Myitnge bridge, scoring 4 damaging hits. 10 others
hit Myitnge railway works. 16 P-40 fighters damage bridge
at Kamaing, attack town of Nanyaseik, and score hits on North
approach to bridge at Namti. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
damage South approach to Pazundaung railroad bridge.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Amboina. A single B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers scores hits on North West shore of Hollandia
Bay.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers during
16-17
April 1943 again fly strike against Kahili airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb and score 8 direct hits
on runway and gun emplacements at Attu. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers and 2 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft abort due to weather.
4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 31 P-38 Lightning fighters,
and 14 P-40 fighters hit Kiska 9 times, bombing installations
and strafing gun emplacements and 3 parked aeroplanes.
