Events On This Day

North Africa. During night of 19-20 April 1943 the British Eighth Army attacked the Afrika Corps positions at Enfidaville.

Norwegian Prime Minister, Vidkun Quisling, at Adolf Hitler's Headquarters.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 18-19 April 1943, Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) Bisleys bomb La Marsa landing ground and roads nearby, and attack activity on beach at Reyville. During day, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping at Tunis. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers raid La Sebala airfield. Fighter-bombers attack tanks in battle area. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) maintains sea reconnaissance and patrols as far as Sardinia and sea approaches to Naples. Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF) aircraft claim over 100 aircraft destroyed during the day.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit landing grounds and defensive positions, and P-40 fighters escort bombers and fly fighters sweeps as British Eighth Army opens assault on Enfidaville positions.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit bridges in Burma, seriously damaging Namti railroad bridge between Mogaung and Myitkyina. 9 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Rangoon's main railroad station.

Fifth Air Force. Colonel Roger M Ramey succeeds General Howard K Ramey as Commanding Officer V Bomber Command. Single medium bombers or heavy bombers bomb airfields at Hollandia, Lae, Cape Gloucester, and Gasmata.

Eleventh Air Force 9 missions involving 14 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 32 P-40 fighters, and 23 P-38 Lightning fighters are flown to Kiska. First mission is weathered out of primary target, Attu, and directed to Kiska. Bombing and strafing concentrates on 4 grounded ships and submarine base area where fires are started. One ship, believed to serve as power station, is set afire.
