Type VII was designed as Ocean going U-boats and had a single
hull with six watertight compartments. Armament consisted
of five torpedo tubes in the bow and one at the stern, and
one 8.8 cm L/45 SK C/35 deck gun, and one

cm Flak 30.
The Type VII U-boats were the mainstay of the German U-boat
force during World War II. There were a total of 709 Type
VII U-boats built during the course of the war, there were
seven main types VIIA, VIIB, VIIC, VIIC/41, VIIC/42, VIID
and VIIF. Many of the later variants had increased range better
performance, increased armament.
Type VIIA ten of this class were built between 1935
and 1937. Six were constructed by
