Type II was designed as a coastal U-boats these U-boats were
based on the Finnish submarine Vesikko and had a single hull,
with three watertight compartments. Armament consisted of
three torpedo tubes in the bow with room for 2 additional
torpedoes stored, and one

cm Flak 30, but after 1944 two
2
cm Flak 30 were installed, but no deck gun.
Type II were used for operational service, during the war,
but ended up being used as training boats. Some Type II were
transported to Russia, and reassembled for use in the Black
Sea.
Type IIA only six of this class were built between
1934 and 1935. They were all constructed by
Deutsche
Werke AG, of Kiel, U-1, U-2, U-3, U-4, U-5, and U-6.
Type IIB twenty of this class were built between 1935,
and 1936. Fourteen were constructed by
F.
Krupp Germaniawerft AG, of Kiel, U-7, U-8, U-9, U-10,
U-11, U-12, U-17, U-18, U-19, U-20, U-21, U-22, U-23, U-24.
Four were constructed by
Deutsche
Werke AG, of Kiel, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16.
Two were constructed by
Flender Werke AG, of L�beck-Siems U-120, and U-121.
Type IIC eight of this class were built between 1937
and 1940. They were all constructed by
Deutsche
Werke AG, of Kiel, U-56, U-57, U-58, U-59, U-60, U-61,
U-62, and U-63.
Type IID sixteen of this class were built between 1939
and 1940. They were all constructed by
Deutsche
Werke AG, of Kiel, U-137, U-138, U-139, U-140, U-141,
U-142, U-143, U-144, U-145, U-146, U-147, U-148, U-149, U-150,
U-151, and U-152.
