Events On This Day

United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe (USSAFE). Combined Chiefs of Staff accept United States plan for a strategic air command to coordinate operations of Fifteenth and Eighth Air Forces.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-36 Apache dive bomber bomb harbour and town of Civitavecchia. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers also attack Pescara, hitting railroad, road, and town area. A-36 Apache dive bomber, P-40 fighters, and Desert Air Force (DAF) fighters hit gun position West of Orsogna, towns of Viticuso and San Vittoria, and bridge at Civitella Roveto.

Fifteenth Air Force. Heavy cloud cover severely restricts operations. 1 B-26 Marauder medium bombers attacks bridge South of Arma di Taggia.

Fourteenth Air Force. Changte is hit twice by a total of 13 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and several escorting fighters. 8 P-40 fighters strafe freight ears between Mogaung and Myitkyina.

Fifth Air Force. More that 90 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Cape Gloucester and Borgen Bay areas. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb troop encampments and dumps in Finschhafen area. P-40 fighters strafe boats and barges near Madang. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields and village on Haroekoe.

Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers carry out strikes against Kahili and Kieta Harbour. Torokina Island is bombed by 2 B-34 Lexington bomber on patrol.

Seventh Air Force. During 6-7 December 1943, 14 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, staging through Tarawa, hit targets on Maloelap and Wotje Atolls. 22 A-24 Banshee dive bomber from Makin, escorted by Marine F6F Hellcat fighter, hit Emidj. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Nukufetau bomb Maloelap, and 1 other, failing to reach the primary, drops bombs on Mille. This date marks beginning of FLINTLOCK (capture and defence of Kwajulein and Majuro Atolls).

The prototype Möbelwagen or 2 cm Flakvierling auf Fahrgestell Panzerkampfwagen IV Selbstfahrlafette or abbreviated to 2 cm Flak auf Fgst Pz.Kpfw. IV (Sf) was a self-propelled antiaircraft built from the chassis of the Panzer IV was shown to Adolf Hitler.
