Air Force (RAAF), and South African Air Force (SAAF) bomb
targets in support of ground troops near Orsogna. United States
A-36 Apache dive bomber and P-40 fighters hit command targets (roads, railroads,
bridges) at Avezzano, Frosinone, Viticuso, Gaeta, and Sant'Elia
Fiumerapido.
Fifteenth Air Force. More than 120 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers attack Tatoi and Eleusis airfields,
railroad bridges near Orbetello Lake and town of Porto Santo
Stefano. B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Spoleto viaduct,
Orte marshalling yard, and Civitavecchia harbour. Other B-26
Marauder medium bombers abort mission because of weather.
Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by 16 P-40 fighters,
pound Changte. 9 other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Hofuh
and the 16 escorting P-40 fighters bomb 2 villages to the
North.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack Penfoei, Koepang area. B-25
Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound
enemy supply dumps on Huon Peninsula near Finschhafen. P-39
fighters strafe barges from Saidor to Fortification Point.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
Fighter patrols and aircraft on armed reconnaissance bomb
and strafe several targets of opportunity near Kieta, Southeast
of Cape Torokina, at Baniu Plantation, and along Northeast
coast of Rougainville.
Seventh Air Force. 22 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Nanumea bomb Jaluit, and
11 from Canton Island bomb Mille.
Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly armed reconnaissance. During
8-
9 December
1943 another B-24 Liberator heavy bombers off on a photographic
mission over Kasatochi Island, turns back because of mechanical
trouble.
