Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the corvette HMS Samphire which was torpedoed and sunk off Bougie, Algeria, while escorting convoy TE-14, by the Italian submarine Platino on 30 January 1943. United States of America Navy Department. Announced that USS Argonaut, largest American submarine, was missing, presumed lost.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made heavy nigh attack on Bremen without loss.

North Africa. The Wehrmacht ground forces launched attacks through Kasserine Pass towards Thala, Tebessa and Sbiba.

In the Mediterranean. Allied aircraft raided harbour of Melos, Greece.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Western Desert Air Force (WDAF) passes under operational control of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF), Army Air Force groups of Western Desert Air Force (WDAF) remain under administrative control of Ninth Air Force. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Gafsa railroad yards. Weather foils 3 attempts by P-39 fighters and Spitfires to furnish support to ground forces battling enemy drive North and West of Kasserine Pass. Only 2 P-39 fighters are able to reach the enemy and strafe tanks and trucks.

Ninth Air Force. 93d Bomber Group is relieved from duty with Ninth Air Force in the Middle East for return to duty with Eighth Air Force in United Kingdom.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour and shipping at Amboina. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe several occupied villages and tracks throughout Mubo Komiatum-Salamaua region.

Thirteenth Air Force. Thirteenth Air Force fighters and others (USN, United States Marine Corps (USMC), and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF)) from Guadalcanal provide air support as 43d Division lands in Russell Islands to begin the long push up the Solomons toward Rabaul. Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) forces had aided by bombing airfields in Buin, Kahili, and Ballale areas preceding the invasion (see Fifth Air Force, 19 February 1943 and 20 February 1943).

Eleventh Air Force. Weather prevents all flying from Adak. Amchitka based fighters patrol Kiska.
