The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitoes made two daylight
raids on Berlin on occasion of tenth anniversary of
Adolf
Hitler's accession. Heavy bombers also attacked Hamburg
by night.
North Africa. In Tunisia German 21st Panzer and three Italian
divisions from
Hans-Jürgen
von Arnim's 5th Panzer Army met elements of the French
forces near Faïd, the main pass from the eastern arm
of the mountains into the coastal plains. Fredendall did not
respond to the French request to send reinforcements in the
form of tanks from 1st Armoured Division and after desperate
resistance, the under equipped French defenders were overrun.

In the Mediterranean. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
Liberators made daylight raid on Messina harbour.
Russian Front. In Caucasus Soviet troops captured Tikhoretsk
and Maikop.
In Australasia. Sea and air battle began off the Solomons.
Mr. Winston Churchill arrived in Turkey for two day conference
with President Mustafa Ismet Inonu. Admiral
Karl
Dönitz, U-boat chief, appointed Commander-In-Chief
of Kriegsmarine.
Twelfth Air Force. Over 50 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bomb docks and shipping at Ferryville. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers hit railroad installations and warehouses at El Aouinet
while B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb railroad South of
Reyville. Fighters and A-20 Havoc light bombers carry out
numerous strafing and bombing operations against tanks, motor
transport, and troop concentrations along battle line in Tunisia
between El Guettar and Faid.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb train ferry terminal at Messina.
Direct hits are scored on a ship and antiaircraft battery
near terminal.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and wharf facilities
at Rabaul. A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe and bomb Lae and
area around Mubo in vicinity of Garrison Hill and along Komiatum
Track. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating individually,
bomb runway at Gasmata and attack transport vessel in Open
Bay.
Thirteenth Air Force. Antiaircraft positions and airfield
area at Munda Point are pounded by B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, P-40 fighters and P-39
fighters.
Eleventh Air Force. 2 patrols, each composed of 1 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters, fly over Amchitka
and are recalled early due to weather. 1 B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers, upon an alleged submarine sighting, drops 4
depth charges and 1 bomb whereupon a whale breaks water. Weather
cancels other missions.
