Events On This Day

In Libya. Our forces advancing towards Tripoli closed in on Homs and Tarhuna. Axis airfield at Castel Benito again bombed.

In the Mediterranean. In night operations on 17-18-19 January 1943 British Royal Navy destroyers sank 13 enemy vessels.

Russian Front. South of Voronezh, Soviet troops captured Kamensk and rly junction of Valuiki from the Wehrmacht ground forces defending the area.

In India. Small scale enemy air raid on Calcutta area two bombers destroyed.

It was announced that M. Marcel Peyrouton was appointed Governor-general of Algeria.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit industrial area just South of Tunis and marshalling yard at Jabal al Jallud. P-38 Lightning fighters provide cover for heavy bombers. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Medenine and nearby motor park. Fighters continue routine reconnaissance, patrol, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft escort missions.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbours at Tripoli and Sousse. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Castel Benito airfield and motor transport on road. Ground forces regain contact with enemy. Coastal force reaches Homs while South column presses toward Tarhunah.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Pandaveswar fly missions over Burma and Thailand. 1 flight bombs Thazi, a railroad junction South of Mandalay. The other flight carries out photo reconnaissance of Kanchanaburi and bombs docks at Bassein during return trip. This reconnaissance flight, the largest mission in the theatre to date, reveals construction of a new rail line from Thailand to Burma. 14 P-40 fighters and a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Kamaing.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe troops in Kurenada area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit barracks area and supply dumps at Toeal and pound supply dumps at Lae. Heavy bombers carry out individual attacks on various targets at Lae, Madang, Cape Hollman, Cape Saint George, Finschhafen, and Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters, bomb runway and revetments at Munda.

Eleventh Air Force. The crew of one of the 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers missing from previous day's mission, which had crash landed at Great Sitkin Island, is picked up by a Navy tender. Weather precludes missions and searches.
