Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that the minesweeper HMS Bramble was sunk by the Kriegsmarine destroyer Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt in the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942 while escorting convoy JW-51B to Russia.

North Africa. The Wehrmacht to ground forces advanced seven miles South West of Pont du Fahs.

In Libya. The British Eight Army troops occupied Homs and Tarhuna.

Russian Front. Rly centres of Proletarskaya and Nevinnomysk occupied by Soviet troops.

The Luftwaffe carried out a daylights raid on Southeast England and London, London City Council school in Lewisham bombed with death-roll of 39 children and five teachers.

Chilean government broke off relations with Germany, Italy and Japan.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Cap Mangin near Gabes when cloud cover prevents bombing of primary target, Tripoli. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping in Straits of Sicily. Fighters continue reconnaissance and patrols, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft continue transport flights with fighters escort.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbour at Tripoli. P-40 fighters fly top cover and fighter-bomber operations as enemy resistance to British advance stiffens in Homs-Tarhunah area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb supply dumps at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating singly, attack Cape Gloucester, Gasmata, Madang, and Finschhafen. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack targets in Aroe Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers claim hit on destroyer off South Bougainville.

Seventh Air Force. Colonel Truman H Landon becomes Commanding Officer VII Bomber Command.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather aircraft aborts shortly after takeoff. A B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and a Navy PBY search without results for the 2 missing B-24 Liberator heavy bombers.
