Events On This Day

North Africa. In Tunisia Wehrmacht ground forces gained some ground South West of Pont du Fahs.

The first Warsaw Ghetto Uprising begins.

In Libya. The British Eighth Army advancing on Tripoli passed through Misurata and reached Zliten. Castel Benito airbase again heavily bombed.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied Sinyavino and Schlüsselburg and Russian officials announce that the Soviet ground forces has broken the Wehrmacht's siege of Leningrad as part of Operation Iskra, opening a narrow land corridor to the city. Georgy Zhukov is promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union.

In Australasia. Sanananda village in Papua captured by Allied troops.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Castel Benito airfield. B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack 2 vessels in Gulf of Hammamet. Fighters fly reconnaissance and patrols and escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft runs.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers strike Tripoli harbour. P-40 fighters fly top cover and fighter-bomber mission. General Montgomery orders accelerated day and night pursuit toward Tripoli as contact with Rommel's forces is temporarily lost due to terrain and obstacles.

Tenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strike Kamaing.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb motor pool and supply dumps at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating individually, bomb Madang and Malahang airfields and attack cargo ship Southeast of Rambutyo Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, and P-40 fighters attack shipping at Shortland Island, bomb Ballale Island, and attack Schooner South of Santa Isabel. Hits are scored on 2 vessels.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on reconnaissance reports 2 vessels in Kiska Harbour. Thereupon 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 4 B-26 Marauder medium bombers, 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and 6 P-38 Lightning fighters fly out of Adak. Mechanical trouble forces 2 B-26 Marauder medium bombers to return. Bomb run is negative. Meanwhile bad weather closes in on Kiska and Adak. 6 aircraft are lost. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers lands in a 20 miles per hour downwind and crashes into 2 P-38 Lightning fighters while 3 other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are missing on return flight.
