Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the trawlers HMS Horatio which was sunk on 7 January 1943 by the Kriegsmarine motor torpedo boat S-58 off Cape de Garde, Algeria. And HMS Jura which was also sunk on 7 January 1943 by the Kriegsmarine U-371 in the Western Mediterranean about 35 nautical miles East North East of Algiers, Algeria.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again raided Berlin in strength, 22 bombers missing.

In Libya. Castel Benito, airbase in of Tripoli, heavily raided by Allied bombers.

Russian Front. Soviet troops captured Millerovo, on Voronezh-Rostov rly.

In India. Enemy aircraft raided airfield in Chittagong area.

In Australasia. Japanese air force bombers and fighters raided Milne Bay, Papua.

In two night raids on London and Southeast England ten Luftwaffe bombers were destroyed.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters cover, attack rail junction at Graiba. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on shipping strike fail to locate vessels and return with bombs. Fighters fly routine reconnaissance and patrols and escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft missions.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Tripoli harbour. P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance, patrol, top cover, and fighter-bomber missions as British ground forces pursue enemy toward Tripoli, reaching positions 10 miles east of Misurata on coast with Beni Ulid on the South flank. During 17-18 January 1943, The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators hit Castel Benito airfield and road junction West of Homs.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb railroad targets North of Monywa. 3 others bomb rail junction at Maymyo.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe Mambare Delta and hit positions between Bakumbari and Salamaua. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb landing grounds and shipping in Rabaul. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers again pound supply stores at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating individually, attack Finschhafen and Madang wharf areas, Malahang airfield, airfield at Gasmata, and a vessel Southeast of Rambutyo Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters pound mortar positions near Allied lines on Guadalcanal. Ground supply lines to Mount Austen battle area reopen after 3 days of being closed because their extension outran the capacity of the native carriers. During the 3 days, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers from Henderson Field airlift rations, water, and ammunition to the troops, using what improvised cargo parachutes are available and in many cases wrapping the supplies in burlap or canvas and pushing them out.
