The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine
HMS Splendid which was sunk south of Isola di Capri, Italy
by depth charges from the by the Kriegsmarine destroyer Hermes
ZG-3 formerly the British-built Greek destroyer Vasilefs Georgios
on
21 April 1943.
Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out
on 16-
17 May
1943 by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancaster bombers,
later known as the Dambusters , using a specially developed
bouncing bomb invented and developed by Barnes Wallis. The
Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic
flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley,
while the Sorpe dam sustained only minor damage eight out
of 19 Lancaster's lost.
In Burma. In Arakan British troops raided Maungdaw from the
sea.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Trapani during
15-16
May 1943. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) and
Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) planes fly sea
patrol, reconnaissance, and convoy escort.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters escort shipping off Mediterranean coast.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF). Lancasters breach Mohne
and Edersee dams, flooding large portions of Ruhr Valley.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kendari airfield area. Single
heavy bombers attack coastal or offshore targets in Northeast
New Guinea, New Britain, and New Ireland.
Eleventh Air Force. Air ground liaison B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bombs Chichagof Harbour with unobserved results. Another
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drops supplies to ground forces
on Attu. 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers, and 12 P-38 Lightning fighters fly ground
support missions to Attu. Because of weather, only the P-38
Lightning fighters get through and strafe antiaircraft guns,
installations and barges, scoring several hits. The bombers
are directed to bomb Kiska. 2 P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance
mission over Kiska.
