The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine
HMS Thunderbolt (formerly Thetis).
North Africa. The Afrika Corps attacked First Army positions
near Mejez-el-Bab, but withdrew, losing 33 panzers. The British
Eighth Army troops captured Takrouna, North West of Enfidaville.
President Roosevelt announced execution by Japanese authorities
of American airmen captured during raid on Tokyo in
18
April l942.
British Government renewed warning that use of gas against
Russians would be followed by use of gas against military
objectives in Germany.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Weather prevents completion
of any missions by Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF).
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters and
Light bombers hit landing grounds and military traffic on
roads, fly sweeps and armed reconnaissance, and attack ground
forces and aircraft in Medjez el Bab-Goubellat area where
an enemy counterattack by Armoured and Infantry columns during
20-21 April
1943 ends in costly failure.
Ninth Air Force. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators,
under IX Bomber Command control, bomb Naples. P-40 fighters
bomb and strafe barges along coast. British Eighth Army meets
such fierce opposition at Takrouna that General Montgomery
decides to confine offensive to coastal region.
Tenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb railroad yards at Maymyo, and
9 more bomb area around Myitnge bridge. 16 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers are dispatched to bomb Bangsue Arsenal and other
targets in Bangkok, but only 4 reach target area and loose
bombs over the city.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kaimana and Laga. Single B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack coastal villages in Northeast
New Guinea and hit Ubili and Gasmata.
Eleventh Air Force. Commander North African Theatre of Operations,
United States Army (NORPACFOR) places all Army and Navy Air
Forces (Task group 16.1) under General Butler. The Army Air
Striking Unit (Eleventh Air Force) is designated Task Unit
16.1.1 and the Naval Air Search Unit (Patrol Wing Four) is
designated Task Unit 16.1.2. 2 P-38 Lightning fighters take
off for Kiska but abort mission.
