Events On This Day

Russian Front. Soviet Air Force raided Briansk, Kremenchug and Dnepropetrovsk.

Eighth Air Force. 135 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers attack various targets as well as airfields and naval installations on Helgoland, Kriegsmarine U-boat yard, marshalling yard and airfield at Emden, naval base and submarine construction works at Wilhelmshaven; and air facilities at Caen and Poix.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Palermo during 14-15 May 1943. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) maintains sea patrol and reconnaissance over large area of Mediterranean from West coast of Italy over Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, and as far North as Marseille.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly sea patrol.

Fourteenth Air Force. 25-35 Japanese bombers and 30-40 fighters attack Kunming. Nearly all of the bombs fall in the West and South West of the airfield, causing little damage. 28 P-40 fighters intercept, claiming 13 fighters and 2 bombers shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound airfields at Lae and Gasmata. A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe aeroplanes and buildings at Lae. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Rabaul and hit Nabire. Single heavy bombers hit Gasmata, Cape Gloucester, and barges South West of Ubili.

Seventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Midway bomb Wake. 4 others abort and 7 others fail to find target. 22 fighters intercept the formation. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers claim 4 shot down. 1 heavy bomber is lost.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather again curtails operations. Air ground liaison B-24 Liberator heavy bombers observes and directs air operations at Attu throughout the day as visibility permits and directs supply drop for ground forces by another B-24 Liberator heavy bombers in 2 air-ground support missions. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Holtz Bay and Chichagof Harbour; 6 P-38 Lightning fighters strafe antiaircraft installations in Holtz Bay area.
