Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine depot ship HMS Medway which was torpedoed and sunk by U-372 off Alexandria in the Mediterranean last year on 30 June 1942.

Heavy night raid by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers on Italian naval base of Spezia.

North Africa. Forward troops of the British 8th Army made contact with the Afrika Corps prepared positions at Enfidaville.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers pound airfields at Castelvetrano and Milo, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Oudna airfield, and P-38 Lightning fighters bomb cruiser at La Maddalena and other shipping at Porto Torres. Fighters maintain sweeps and armed reconnaissance over Northeast Tunisia and Straits of Sicily. During 12-13 March 1943, British aeroplanes bomb Megrine landing ground.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are dispatched against harbour at Catania. Total cloud cover prevents visual contact with target. 1 drops bomb in target area, but others jettison load or return to base without bombing. P-40 fighters fly convoy escort. British Eighth Army's 10 Corps, continuing North reaches antitank ditch guarding new enemy positions at Enfidaville and unsuccessfully attempts, on limited scale, to force retreat before the line can be strengthened.

Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Myitnge bridge without inflicting further damage to the structure. 9 others hit Monywa airfield. 6 P-40 fighters knock out bridge at Shaduzup.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe Labiabi area while a single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs runway at Finschhafen.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy aircraft bomb airfields at Munda and Strafe barge at Bambatana.

Eleventh Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 15 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers 28 P-38 Lightning fighters and 20 P-40 fighters fly 11 attacks to Kiska. 43 tons of bombs are dropped on Main Camp, North Head, and runway. Fighters attack Main Camp causing large fires, and also strafe aircraft on the beach. Heavy antiaircraft fire damages 2 P-38 Lightning fighters, 1 of which later crashes into the sea, and 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers.
