Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces drove wedge into
defences West of Kharkov; heavy attacks also delivered from
North and South.
Eighth Air Force. 74 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers hit area around Amiens and Abbeville. Largest
effort is aimed at Longeau railroad facilities and marshalling
yard at Amiens. No aircraft are lost as fighters protection
is excellent.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers are sent against
shipping Northeast of Bizerte but fail to locate target. Fighters
hit positions and movement in Mareth Line area, and fly patrols
and reconnaissance.
Ninth Air Force. General Brereton, Commanding General, directs
that Headquarters, Desert Air Task Force (DATF) be redesignated
Advance Headquarters, Ninth Air Force, and that the Army Air
Force tactical units with the Headquarters be designated Desert
Air Task Force (DATF). B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Naples
harbour through heavy clouds. P-40 fighters fly top cover
and fighters sweep, and engage about 25 fighters in combat,
claiming 3 destroyed but also losing 3.
Tenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers attack and slightly damage Pazundaung
bridge.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and shipping
at Wewak. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs Gasmata
airfield and warehouses on Wide Bay, while a B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers attacks shipping off Netherlands New Guinea.
Thirteenth Air Force. Vila and Munda airfields are again attacked
by B-24 Liberator heavy bombers in light raids. Also bombed
is Faisi Island.
Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on reconnaissance returns early
because of adverse weather. 12 P-40 fighters strike Kiska
beach, camp and runway. Hits are observed on these targets
and among 14 parked aeroplanes. 8 P-38 Lightning fighters
with 8 P-40 fighters flying top cover again take off for Kiska.
Only 3 of the P-38 Lightning fighters reach the target and
strafe aircraft on beach. Another sights a submarine South
West of Rat Island.
