Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During

April 1943, Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) Hurricanes
and Bisleys bomb La Sebala airfield and attack transport on
Tunis-Pont-du-Fahs road, and Western Desert Air Force (WDAF)
Light bombers hit airfields at Sainte-Marie du Zit and Korba
during
13-14
April 1943. During the day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bomb Elmas, Monserrato, and El Aouina airfields. P-38 Lightning
fighters escort heavy bombers and fly bombing and strafing
mission against beached vessel Southeast of Cape Zebib. A-20
Havoc light bombers bomb Bordj Toum. Fighter-bombers hit motor
convoy near Grich el Oued and trucks Northeast of Dechret
Ben Saidane and battery East of Djedeida. Fighters fly reconnaissance
and sweeps throughout Tunisian battle area. Northwest African
Coastal Air Force (NACAF) planes maintain sea reconnaissance
and patrols.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters fly convoy escort, and carry out fighters sweeps
over area as British Eighth Army's 10 Corps continues to make
quick jabs at positions at Enfidaville. These attempts to
force enemy retreat are unsuccessful.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters, dropping 1,000 lb bombs, hit airfields at Myitkyina
and Manywet, rendering runways at both unusable.
Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters strafe pack horses South of Tengchung, barracks
and warehouses in Lungling, and cattle and trucks North of
Lungling.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers and medium bombers carry out widespread but unsuccessful
attacks on individual enemy vessels. Japanese aircraft carry
out heavy attack on Milne Bay area, severely damaging 1 vessel,
beaching 1 vessel, and hitting 2 others, but doing very little
damage to Army Air Force facilities in the area. Antiaircraft
defences and the 40 P-40 fighters and P-38 Lightning
fighters that intercept the enemy strike claim 14 aeroplanes
shot down.
Thirteenth Air Force. XIII Air Force Services Command is activated.
Eleventh Air Force. 30 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters, 17 P-38 Lightning fighters, 9 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers and 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers fly 10 missions
to Kiska, bombing and strafing runway, North Head area, installations,
parked seaplanes, and facilities on Little Kiska.
Zone of Interior. Weather Wing is activated to assume responsibility
from Headquarters Army Air Force or supervision of Army Air
Forces Weather Service (AAFWS) (established in 1937 and designated
Army Air Forces Weather Service AAF-WS in 1942).
