Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made heaviest bombing raid on Essen.

North Africa. Three Afrika Corps attacks repulsed West of Sejenane.

Russian Front. Soviet troops entered Vyasma, East of Smolensk, Russians retired West of Kharkov.

Luftwaffe fighters and bombers made a low-level day raid on Greater London area five out of 24 Fw l90s shot down by fighters of a Norwegian squadron.

It was announced that Mr. Eden had arrived in Washington United States of America.

Eighth Air Force. 63 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers strike Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yard. Good fighters escort is major factor in this no-loss mission.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb docks and marshalling yards at Sousse. B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound supply dumps and score near misses on bridges at Enfidaville, while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb shipping between Tunisia and Sicily. Fighters escort the bombers and carry out attacks on ground targets, destroying several vehicles in Pichon area and South of Pont-du-Fahs. Wellingtons bomb Tunis docks during 12-13 March 1943.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Pazundaung bridge, causing negligible damage.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers attack Guadagasal Gap area and Salamaua airfield. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack shipping at Amboina and bomb Fuiloro. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Rabaul airfield while individual B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit wreck of Talasea and bomb Cape Gloucester.

Thirteenth Air Force. Airfields at Munda, Ballale Island, and Kahili are again hit by light B-24 Liberator heavy bombers raids. P-38 Lightning fighters destroy small vessel off Northeast coast of Rendova Island.

Seventh Air Force. VII Afighter-bomberC is redesignated VII Air Force Services Command (AFSC).

Eleventh Air Force. 12 Amchitka based P-40 fighters scout Kiska.
