Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the destroyer HMS Pakenham which was scuttled north of Pantelleria by HMS Paladin after sustaining heavy damages in action with the Italian torpedo boats Cigno and Cassiopea off Sicily on 16 April 1943.

North Africa. Armoured units of First Army drove across neck of Cape Bon, cutting off Afrika Corps troops in the peninsula from those holding out round Zaghouan.

Russian Front. Soviet Air Force made heavy raids on Kiev, Briansk and Orel.

Lieutenant General Jacob Loucks Devers arrived in London as United States Commander in Europe, where, from his London headquarters, he organised and trained many divisions for the cross-channel attack.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 9-10 May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Palermo and surrounding area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers follow up, shortly past noon, with raids on airfields at Milo and Bo Rizzo. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers attack Pantelleria harbour, Korba bridge, Menzel Temime landing ground, Kelibia areas, and town of Menzel Bou Zelfa. Numerous motor transport and troop concentrations on Cap Bon peninsula are bombed and strafed as British 6th Armoured Division drives to Hammamet, cutting off the peninsula.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Pantelleria landing ground. P-40 fighters bomb Pantelleria and Cap Bon peninsula. Fighters claim 4 aeroplanes destroyed.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters bomb and strafe Kwitu, leaving several areas burning fiercely.

Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly offensive sweep against command in Nam Dinh and Hanoi areas. 4 locomotives and 3 river boats are destroyed, a train carrying troops and supplies is heavily damaged, and several trucks of troops are destroyed.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe Labu area while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Cape Gloucester airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating individually, attack coastline targets in Northeast New Guinea, New Britain, and on Jamdena Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters join Navy and Marine aircraft in strike against gun emplacements, runway, and revetments at Munda airfield.
