North Africa. Organised fighting ceased in Northeast Tunisia
where six German generals surrendered to 2nd United States
Corps, enemy resistance continued round Zaghouan and in Cape
Bon peninsula, which was blockaded by naval forces and heavily
attacked from the air.
In Burma. It was announced that in Arakan British had evacuated
Buthidaung in face of Japanese threat of encirclement.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF).During
8-9
May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons
bomb Villacidro, Elmas, and Decimomannu airfields, and Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) Bisleys, bomb troops and
vehicle concentrations in Hammamet-Nabeul-Menzel Bou Zelfa-Soliman-Tazorhrane
areas. During day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with
P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb Palermo; B-26 Marauder
medium bombers follow immediately with attack on same target.
Fighters fly sweeps over battle area, provide cover for destroyers,
strafe barges, bomb buildings in battle area, strafe trucks
between Hammamet and Soliman and bomb landing ground near
Menzel Temime. Light bombers and medium bombers also bomb
shipping, hit concentrations in battle area and in town of
Soliman, and bomb airfields on Pantelleria. United States
II Corps receives unconditional surrender of enemy troops
in its zone.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers attack harbour facilities at Messina,
scoring hits on ferry terminal, round house, 2 ferries, and
a ship. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit landing ground on
Pantelleria. Over 300 P-40 fighters fly escort and reconnaissance
missions, and strafing and bombing raids on landing ground,
vessels, vehicles, bridges, and gun positions in areas of
Zembra Islands, Cap Bon, and Pantelleria.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bomb Manokwari, Nabire, Kaimana, and Madang airfield, and
Wewak-But area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields
at Gasmata.
