Cape Bon peninsula. First and Eighth Armies closed in on Afrika
Corps still resisting near Zaghouan.
Russian Front. Soviet Air Force raided railways at Briansk,
Orel, Kharkov, Krasnograd, Poltava, Lozovaya, and Dnepropetrovsk.
In Burma. In the Arakan peninsula allied troops withdrew from
Maungdaw.
United States of America. American ground forces landed on
Japanese occupied island of Attu, in the Aleutians.
It was announced that Mr. Churchill had arrived in Washington.
It was announced that troops from Barbados had embarked for
Dominica in connexion with the Martinique affair.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-26
Marauder medium bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bomb Marsala, hitting warehouse, docks, railroad yards, seaplane
base, and city area. P-40 fighters bomb and strafe harbour
at San Michele. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF)
fighters and light bombers attack vehicles, gun positions
and troop concentrations in Zaghouan Sainte-Marie du Zit area
and on Cap Bon as British 4th Division completes uneventful
sweep around Cap Bon peninsula, revealing no important forces
there. Resistance in Zaghouan sector weakens.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers strike Catania harbour, severely damaging
harbour area and several ships. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
strike battle area in Northeast Tunisia. P-40 fighters fly
escort and armed reconnaissance, and carry out bombing and
strafing missions in Cap Bon area against motor transport,
concentrations, roads, docks, and antiaircraft batteries.
Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers pound Syriam, causing large fires
in the town area.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
hit airfields and general area at Rabaul. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb Penfoei and Dili.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers fly harassing strikes during
10-11 May 1943
against Kahili airfield and against Shortland Island.
Eleventh Air Force. The following missions support United
States forces landing on Attu: 1 air ground liaison sortie
by 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers supply sortie dropping supplies to ground forces,
and 5 attack missions, flown by 11 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
and 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers . First attack mission
cannot find target and instrument bombs targets which include
runway, radar, submarine base, and camp area. Because of poor
visibility next 2 missions hit Kiska, where runway and Main
Camp are attacked. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers then bomb
Chichagof Harbour area through fog while another drops leaflets
on Attu.
