heavy bombers bomb marshalling yard at Halle, rail traffic
centre at Leipzig, marshalling yard and industrial complex
at Gera, and city area of Eisleben. 15 fighters groups fly
around 600 effective sorties in support of the heavy bombers.
Ninth Air Force. 99 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers and light bombers hit marshalling yards at Gottingen
and Northeim and city area of Herzberg, and drop leaflets
over 3 city areas. Fighters fly escort, alerts, sweeps, and
armed reconnaissance, and support United States VIII Corps
in Eisenach area, and XX Corps East of the Werra near Muhlhausen.
Twelfth Air Force. General Darcy takes command of XXII Tactical
Air Command. A-20 Havoc light bombers and A-26 Invader light
bombers on night intruder missions,

April 1945, bomb several bridges in Po River Valley, scoring
good results on 8 of the targets, also hitting assembly area
along the Po River. XXII Tactical Air Command fighters and
fighter-bombers hit lines of command, mainly in Po Valley,
and support United States Fifth Army forces attacking toward
Massa Lombarda. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers cancel missions
against targets on Brenner line due to weather, but hit 6
bridges in Central Po Valley and gun positions at La Spezia.
Fifteenth Air Force. 387 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb marshalling yard
flak positions and ordnance depot at Verona and marshalling
yard and small arms plant at Brescia. 179 other heavy bombers
sent against targets in North Italy are recalled. 81 P-38
Lightning fighters dispatched to bomb bridge in Austria abort
due to weather. 14 manage to attack bridges near Austro-Italian
border. 6 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers of 54 airborne strafe
railroad targets in Straubing, Plattling area. Others fly
reconnaissance missions.
Tenth Air Force. With improving weather conditions combat
strikes in C Burma battle area increase. 70 fighter-bombers
attack troop concentrations, artillery positions, tanks, trucks,
fuel dumps, and general targets along and immediately behind
enemy lines. Targets are located in several areas including
Paklu, Nawnghkio, Loilem, Takaw, Mong Hko, Kongleng, Nawng
Hsan Pu, and Indaw. Air supply sorties continue on steady
basis throughout the day.
Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit targets in Bakli Bay area.
4 P-38 Lightning fighters knock out bridge in Dien Bien Phu
area. 8 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers blast railroad targets,
troops, horses, and boat landings in Chengheien area and along
Lung Hai railroad and Yellow River.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb town of Hokko. Ground support
sorties continue in areas around Balete Pass, West of Fort
Stotsenburg, North, Northeast, and South of Laguna de Bay,
and around Legaspi. Fighters also hit Carabao Island and Infanta.
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb town North of Cebu City
while fighters support ground units on Cebu. A-20 Havoc light
bombers support ground forces on Negros. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers pound Bunawan. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Jolo
Island defences and ammunition and supply dumps. At Manila
United States Army Forces, Pacific (AFPAC) is established
under General MacArthur. 400 Kamikaze planes make all out
effort against Okinawa shipping and beachheads. 2 destroyers,
2 ammunition ships, a mine sweeper and an Landing Ships, Tank
is sunk. Other vessels are damaged. Nearly 300 Japanese planes
are expended.
Seventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam pound positions and
airfield on Marcus. 23 from Angaur bomb barracks and wharf
at Bunawan.
Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack and photograph Kurabu,
especially the airfield, while 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
hit radar installations in an all out attack on Hayakegawa,
Kotani Shima, and Minami Cape, dropping napalm filled incendiaries
for the first time. Buildings and shipping in North part of
Hayakegawa are hit especially hard. Another B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers flies weather reconnaissance.
