Eighth Air Force. More than 1,000 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) heavy bombers attack 5 marshalling yards, 4 ordnance
depots, an armament works, an airfield, an aircraft parts
factory, and 2 town areas in South Central Germany. 12 fighters
groups support the heavy bombers.
Ninth Air Force. Weather prevents operations by United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division. Fighters fly patrols,
sweeps, and armed reconnaissance, and support United States
7th Armoured Divisions attack on Ruhr pocket South West of
Brilon, XX Corps' drive East in Muhlhausen area, XII Corps'
advance in Meiningen area, 2d Armoured Division bridgehead
astride the Weser River South of Hameln, 8th Armoured Division
(preparing for assault on Soest), and 5th Armoured Division
near Minden.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb 5 bridges in North Italy and
Austria, at Steinach, Matrei am Brenner, Modena, Salorno,
and San Michele all'Adige, and blast gun positions at La Spezia.
These attacks follow night raids by A-20 Havoc light bombers
and A-26 Invader light bombers on bridges at Lavis, Ala, San
Michele all'Adige, San Ambrogio di Valpolicella, Piazzola
sul Brenta, Cittadella, and Montebello, and other targets.
Fighters and fighter-bombers devote their largest effort to
close support of ground forces, blasting occupied areas and
gun positions in Massa Lombarda area, and also attack command
and dumps in Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. 457 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers attack railroad bridge at Dravograd, marshalling yards
and locomotive depots at Brescia, Alessandria, and Turin,
and airfield at Udine. 96 P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb
Radovljica railroad bridge, 27 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
with 13 flying top cover, strafe rail command in Munich, Regensburg,
Passau, and Linz areas. 20 P-38 Lightning fighters fly reconnaissance
missions. Around 300 fighters sorties are flown to escort
transport, reconnaissance, and heavy bomber missions including
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) raid on Monfalcone shipyards.
Tenth Air Force. Bad weather cancels scheduled strikes. Transports
continue large-scale operations to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 27 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance attack troops, horses,
and river, road, and rail traffic at Shanhsien, Shihkiachwang,
and Son La, and in Tehsien and Loyang Pinglo area.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kowloon Docks and nearby
airfield, while other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kiirun
harbour. 180 sorties in support of ground forces are flown
in Luzon. A-20 Havoc light bombers and patrolling P-61 Black Widow, night fighters support
troops on Cebu and Negros. P-38 Lightning fighters hit Tarakan
Island and Tawau.
Seventh Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam hit targets on Eten
and Dublon Islands. 22 from Angaur pound bivouac area at Bunawan.
