Anglo-United States forces of occupation in Germany, and shipping
problems.
Eighth Air Force. 400 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers and 4 groups of escorting fighters are recalled
from mission against targets in Germany because of expected
bad weather at United Kingdom bases and heavy clouds.
Ninth Air Force. All operations cancelled due to weather.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers attack railroad bridges at Chiusaforte, Voghera, Lavis,
Rovereto, and San Michele all' Adige, and marshalling yard
at Rovereto, with only fair results. Fighters and fighter-bombers
hit bridges, rail lines, trains, vehicles, and other targets
over wide spread areas of North Italy. During
30-31
January 1945, light bombers hit several railroad targets during
intruder missions in Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. 670 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers bomb Moosbierbaum oil refinery, marshalling yards
at Graz and Maribor, and scattered targets. P-38 Lightning
fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly over 300 escorting
sorties for the heavy bombers. Other P-38 Lightning fighters
fly reconnaissance and reconnaissance escort and drop supplies
into Austria. During
30-31
January 1945, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drop supplies in
North Italy.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit troops and stores at Namlan. 50
P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack troops and supplies at several
locations including Namawtawng, Tawkut, Mong Long, Hsipaw,
Hsenwi, and Namhpakka. Transports complete 535 sorties to
forward bases and front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers strafe targets along Pinghan
railroad.
Thirteenth Air Force. General Barnes again assumes command
of XIII Fighter Command.
Seventh Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam bomb airfields and
antiaircraft defences on Iwo Jima. During 31 January 1945
to
1 February
1945, 9 more heavy bombers, flying single bomber harassment
strikes, hit the island.
