Adolf
Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on 30 April 1945 in
his Führerbunker in Berlin. His wife Eva Braun committed
suicide with him by ingesting cyanide. That afternoon, in
accordance with
Adolf
Hitler's prior instructions, their remains were carried
up the stairs through the bunker's emergency exit, doused
in petrol and set alight in the Reich Chancellery garden outside
the bunker.
Ninth Air Force. Weather cancels United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) 9th Bomber Division and XXIX Tactical Air Command
operations. IX Tactical Air Command flies Air Force cover,
sweeps, and armed reconnaissance. XIX Tactical Air Command
flies patrols and armed reconnaissance, and co-operates with
XII Corps moving Southeast between the Danube and the Czech
border North of Linz and with XX Corps crossing the Isar River
at several points in Landau an der Isar, Land shut area.
Twelfth Air Force. During
29-30
April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc
light bombers and A-26 Invader light bombers hit motor transport
near Lake Como and roads in Trento, San Michele all'Adige,
and Bolzano areas. Bad weather grounds medium bombers. Fighter-bombers
fly armed reconnaissance over North Italy, blasting guns vehicles,
and other targets.
Fifteenth Air Force. For fourth consecutive day bad weather
cancels heavy bomber operations. P-38 Lightning fighters fly
reconnaissance, escorted by P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers.
Other P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters
escort supply dropping missions to North Italy and Yugoslavia.
Tenth Air Force. Bad weather cancels scheduled combat strikes.
Air supply operations to forward areas continue on a steady
basis.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 9 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
hit railroad yards at Taiyuan. 50 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters,
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, and P-40 fighters attack troops,
defensive positions, bridges, rail targets, and scattered
targets in South and East China, concentrating around Laohokow,
Hsihhsiassuchi, and Loning.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Toshien fuel storage and
bomb Tainan, Takao, and Okayama airfields while B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit Taito. Escorting P-38 Lightning fighters
attack numerous targets. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers bomb
Okayama airfield. Numerous missions are flown over Luzon and
Negros by B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers,
and fighter-bombers in support of ground forces. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers attack Davao area. P-38 Lightning fighters hit
Tarakan and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Manggar airfield.
Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Malimpoeng airfield.
Twentieth Air Force. 120 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit airfields at Tachikawa,
Kanoya (2), Kokubu, Oita, Tomitaka, and Saeki, and city of
Hamamatsu. 20 other B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit
alternates and targets. The very heavy bombers claim 10 aircraft
downed. Fighters sent from VII Fighter Command to provide
very long range escort fail to rendezvous.
Seventh Air Force. In a thorough strafing and rocket strike
on several islands of Truk Atoll, 20 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
from Saipan attack seaplane base, several small vessels, airfield,
barracks, radio station, and numerous other targets. 24 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers from Guam pound the airfields on Moen
and Param. 22 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating in 2
waves about 3 hours apart, bomb air installations on Marcus.
