Events On This Day

Ninth Air Force. Weather cancels operations by United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division. Fighters fly patrols and Air Force cover, hit special targets, fly armed reconnaissance over East Germany and West Czechoslovakia, and co-operate with XII Corps moving Southeast between the Danube and the Czech border North of Linz, and with XX Corps as some of its units establish bridgeheads and begin crossing the Isar River in Plattling, Landau an der Isar, Landshut, Passau areas.

Twelfth Air Force. Weather again restricts operations. Medium bombers are grounded. Fighters and fighter-bombers attack retreating forces and command throughout Northeast Italy including Thiene airfield and claim over 350 motor transport destroyed. Enemy forces in Italy, command by General Heinrich von Vietinghoff surrender unconditionally at Caserta, effective 2 May 1945.

Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather again prevents heavy bomber operations. 8 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters complete weather and photo reconnaissance missions. 39 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly armed reconnaissance over Northeast Italy. 5 of the fighters bomb and 4 strafe various targets, claiming 4 motor transports destroyed and a reconnaissance car and 2 parked aircraft damaged.

Tenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack Laihka airfields. 6 others strafe troops and horses at Tadamo. Transports fly 427 sorties to forward areas, landing or dropping 537 tons of supplies.

Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 4 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters blast targets at Talyuan railroad yards. About 50 fighter-bombers, operating in forces of 1 to 4 aircraft, blast numerous targets in South and East China, hitting especially the Fantung area.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). In support of ground forces fighter-bombers hit troop concentrations, supply areas, pillboxes, gun positions, vehicles, and other targets mainly in the Balete Pass, Baguio, and Echague areas. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit New Bosoboso area, where fighters also support ground forces concentrating in Ipo Dam area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Kuching airfield while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Tarakan Island. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Langoan, Mandai, and Mapanget airfields. P-38 Lightning fighters sweep Indochina and strafe Thu Dau Mot airfield.

Twentieth Air Force. 111 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's strike Miyazaki, Miyakonojo, Kokubu, Kanoya (2), and Kushira airfields. The B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's claim nearly 30 aircraft shot down.

Seventh Air Force. 20 Saipan based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters sweep Truk, strafing airfields, defences, and gun positions on Moen and Param and hit Param and Falas with rockets. 24 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers subsequently attack the same airfields. 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating in 2 forces, pound air installations on Marcus.

Eleventh Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attempting to bomb targets in the Kurils abort due to weather front. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers radar bomb Kataoka naval base.
