Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers drop food
supplies in The Hague and Rotterdam areas.
Ninth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-26
Invader light bombers bomb ammunition plant at Stod. IX Tactical
Air Command escorts light bombers, flies Air Force cover,
and patrols Leipzig Schwarzenberg area. XIX Tactical Air Command
flies patrols and armed reconnaissance over East Germany,
West Czechoslovakia, and Austria, dive-bombs Berchtesgaden,
and operates with United States XII Corps which is advancing
Southeast between the Danube and the Czech border and North
into Czechoslovakia North of Passau, and with XX Corps whose
advance elements speed toward the Inn River at Wasserburg.
Twelfth Air Force. During

April 1945 to 1 May 1945, United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and A-26 Invader light bombers
bomb targets in North Italy. Bad weather during the day cancels
medium bombers operations. Fighter-bombers destroy numerous
motor and horse drawn vehicles in Northeast Italy. United
States Fifth Army forces approach Brenner Pass on Austro Italian
border, while British Eighth Army elements make contact with
Yugoslav troops of Marshal Tito near Monfalcone.
Fifteenth Air Force. Despite bad weather 27 United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bomb main station marshalling yard at Salzburg. This is the
final Fifteenth Air Force bombing mission of the Second World
War. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
fly reconnaissance and reconnaissance escort missions.
Fourteenth Air Force. During May the Japanese decide to give
up their Greater East Asia Corridor and withdraw from South
China. Fourteenth Air Force further concentrates its attacks
on rail and road movements and river shipping and thus plays
a major role in critically reducing the enemy's mobility and
supply lines. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 16 P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers knock out bridges near Taiku and Kiehsiu and
hit antiaircraft positions and locomotives near the bridges,
blast gun emplacements in Loning area, and hit several locomotives,
near Shihkiachwang. General Wedemeyer selects General Stratemeyer
to command Army Air Force China Theatre, with both Tenth and
Fourteenth Air Forces under his command.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Heito sugar refinery and
town of Kagi. Far East Air Force (FEAF) continues to support
ground forces on Luzon and Negros. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
support Australian landings on Tarakan Island and bomb Tawau.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Jesselton, Tarakan, Sandakan,
and Kudat, concentrating on airfields.
Seventh Air Force. 16 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields on Marcus
while 10 hit air installations on Param. During the night
9 more, flying individual snooper strikes, hit airfields on
Param and Moen.
Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies weather reconnaissance
over the Kurils.
On 1 May 1945, Hamburg Radio announces that
Adolf
Hitler has died in battle, fighting up to his last breath
against Bolshevism.
Joseph
Goebbels on 1 May 1945, and his wife Magda commit suicide
after killing their six children.
Karl
Dönitz on 1 May 1945, appoints Count Lutz Graf Schwerin
von Krosigk as the new Chancellor of Germany.
