heavy bombers bomb 7 marshalling yards, 2 rail centres, 2
viaducts, a city area, military vehicle and aircraft factories,
and targets in West Germany. 14 fighters groups fly support
and strafe ground targets.
Ninth Air Force. 364 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
A-20 Havoc light bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and
A-26 Invader light bombers bomb rail bridges, supply and command
centres, and defended areas in West Germany. Fighters escort
the bombers, fly armed reconnaissance and patrols and support
United States Third Army units at points along front lines
from South of Saint-Vith to bridgehead area around Saarlautern.
Twelfth Air Force. General Barcus becomes Commanding General
XII Tactical Air Command. Due to high winds and generally
bad weather, medium bombers successfully bomb only 2 targets,
the railway bridges at Calliano and Rovereto, and attack with
less success bridges at Motta di Livenza, Lavis, Mantua, and
Chiusaforte, and railway station at Lavis. XXII Tactical Air
Command fighters and fighter-bombers operate primarily against
command throughout Po Valley. Results are generally good and
bridge at Nervesa della Battaglia is cut. Bridges or their
approaches at Cittadella, Santa Margherita d'Adige and Cismon
del Grappa are damaged along with a variety of targets. During
28-29 January
1945, intruder light bombers hit rail facilities, pontoon
bridge, lights, and motor transport at nearly 50 locations
in Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. Weather prevents bombing operations for
eighth consecutive day. P-38 Lightning fighters fly photo
and weather reconnaissance missions.
Tenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers knock out road bridges at Loi-leng
and Tonglau and hit several nearby targets. 26 P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters hit troop positions in Namhkai area. 11 P-38 Lightning
fighters and 16 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters attack airfields
at Aungban and Heho. 8 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support ground
forces near Banwe. 70 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning
fighters pound troop concentrations and supplies at Panglong,
Tangyan, Wengnan, Homang, Mong Long, Namtu, Mongyin, Mong
Yang, and Namhsam. Large-scale transport operations continue.
Fourteenth Air Force. Pailochi airfield, river and road shipping,
troops, gun positions, buildings, and other targets are attacked
at Kweiyi, Hankow, Sinyang and Chihkiang, between Hengshan
and Siangtan, between Wuhu and Anking, North of Hengyang,
and East and South of Yutze.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers daylight raids concentrate on
Heito airfield area and Corregidor while B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb nearby Cabcaben. Fighter-bombers and A-20 Havoc
light bombers hit targets from Aparri to Echague. Further
South fighters hit gun positions in the Batangas and Verde
Islands areas. A-20 Havoc light bombers support ground forces
inland from Lingayen by hitting Carranglen road net. Others
hit Talavera and Carabao Island.
Twentieth Air Force. About 30 Marianas based United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's strike
at 2 airfields on Iwo Jima.
Seventh Air Force. 19 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Iwo Jima airfields.
2 from Saipan, on armed reconnaissance flight, bomb Marcus.
1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bombs Arakabesan.
