Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Almost 900 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack 2 benzol plants, 3 marshalling yards, 3 bridges, 4 city areas, and targets in West Germany. 5 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups fly escort. 1 group escorts medium bombers of Ninth Air Force.

Ninth Air Force. 95 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division bombers hit command centre at Mayen, rail bridges and overpass at Eller, Sinzig, Remagen, and Kaiserslautern, targets in West Germany, and fly cover for United States First Army forces on front line in Monschau, Butgenbach area.

Twelfth Air Force. Weather again hampers operations. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers have good results on railroad bridges at Lavis and San Michele all'Adige. XXII Tactical Air Command aircraft operate effectively against command and transport targets throughout North Italy including at Milan, Pavia, Cremona, Nervesa della Battaglia, Treviso, Genoa, Padua, and Lake Maggiore areas.

Fifteenth Air Force. Continued bad weather seventh successive day restricts operations to 3 weather reconnaissance flights.

Tenth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers support ground forces Southeast of Banwe, East of Molo, South of Molo Ywama, and near Namhkam. 80 fighter-bombers hit troop concentrations, supply areas, and enemy movement and active areas at or near Namsangsok, Namlan, Pangmakmo, Wengnan, Kutkai, and Mu-lwat. Again well over 500 sorties are flown to forward areas by transports. First convoy from Ledo crosses Chinese border heading for Kunming.

Fourteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers attack railway and river traffic at Wuhu, Sinyang, and Linfen, in Sinsiang Hantan area, between Loyang and Sinyang, and along Pinghan railroad.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers concentrate attacks on Luzon, heaviest tonnage from B-24 Liberator heavy bombers falling on Corregidor. Cavite and targets between Manila and Subic Bay, including Laoag airfield, are also hit. A-20 Havoc light bombers concentrate on targets in Aparri, Gattaran area while fighter-bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit airfields in Cagayan Valley and troops, trucks, and roads in San Felipe and Talavera areas.

Seventh Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam and 10 from Saipan bomb airfields on Iwo Jima. 10 more follow during 28-29 January 1945, with single bomber harassment raids on the airfields. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bomb Arakabesan.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit West Ham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Willesden.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Benenden.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Bromley.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Sidcup.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Kirby le Soken.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit East Ham.
