Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th
Bomber Division hits airfields at Landau an der Isar and oil
depot at Schrobenhausen. Fighters fly Air Force cover, escort
9th Bomber Division, fly armed reconnaissance, and operate
in conjunction with XII Corps as it continues Southeast between
the Danube and the Czech border, and with XX Corps as it reaches
the Danube South West and West of Regensburg.
Twelfth Air Force. During
23-24
April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers
bomb airfields at Yillafranca di Verona, Ghedi, and Bergamo,
marshalling yards at Trento Piacenza and Fidenza, and vehicles
and other targets throughout Po Valley and elsewhere in North
Italy. Medium bombers hit 6 Po River crossings and as ground
forces reach and cross the Po at several points, relieving
necessity for many attacks along the river then carry out
6 attacks between Verona and Trento on Brenner rail line.
Fighters and fighter-bombers blast vehicles on Po Valley roads
North of the river and up to Brenner rail line, and also hit
roads and vehicles between La Spezia and Parma.
Fifteenth Air Force. Approximately 700 United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers attack railroad bridges at Malborghetto
Valbruna, Kolbritz, Drauburg, Fermata di Brondolo, Casarsa
della Delizia, Arnoldstein, and Latisana, road bridges at
Spilimbergo, Bassano del Grappa, and Friola, motor transport
depot at Osoppo, marshalling yards at San Ambrogio di Valpolicella
and Rovereto, and supply dump at Peschiera del Garda. 79 P-38
Lightning fighters and 90 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly
armed reconnaissance over wide areas of North Italy, many
strafing tactical targets North of the advancing United States
Fifth and British Eighth Armies. The P-38 Lightning fighters
carry out several dive-bombing missions, claiming 1 bridge
destroyed and 5 damaged. Other P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
and P-38 Lightning fighters fly 186 sorties in escort of heavy
bombers, reconnaissance missions, and Mediterranean Allied
Tactical Air Force (MATAF) operations. 22 P-38 Lightning fighters
complete reconnaissance flights.
Tenth Air Force. Approximately 40 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters
attack troop concentrations, storage areas, vehicles, and
targets in Mong Nawng vicinity, West of Mong Kung-Laihka road,
South of Loilem, and at Wan Hsan. Transports land or drop
747 tons of supplies at advance bases and in front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Hongay railroad yards and
attack targets in South China Sea. 2 others damage a vessel
at Bakli Bay. 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit railroad
targets from Siaokan to Sinyang while 2 damage bridge at Kuanshuishih.
50 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, P-61 Black Widow, night fighters, and P-40 fighters
attack river craft, railroad targets, trucks, bridges, troops,
horses, and other targets at numerous South and East China
locations as pressure by allied air and ground forces mounts
against enemy movement and supply routes.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers continue to strike
in support of ground forces on Luzon. A-20 Havoc light bombers
hit sugar refineries at Mizukami and Shinei while B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Tainan and Hokko. Other B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Tabanio and Miri.
Twentieth Air Force. 101 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's strike Hitahi aircraft plant
at Tachikawa. 21 others hit alternates and targets, 5 very
heavy bombers are lost. The B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's
claim 16 fighters destroyed.
