Ninth Air Force. Weather cancels combat operations by 9th
Bomber Division. Fighters patrol Magdeburg area and United
States Third Army front East of Bayreuth, Nurnberg area, fly
armed reconnaissance over East Germany and West Czechoslovakia,
and operate in conjunction with XII Corps as it presses forward
North of Regensburg between Danube River and Czech Border.
Soviet Army forces enter Berlin.
Twelfth Air Force. During
22-23
April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers
and night fighters hit Po crossings, marshalling yard, airfields,
vehicles, trains, and targets in general in North and West
Po Valley. During the day medium bombers pound Po crossings,
road bridges over Brenta River, and hit Brenner rail line
at 4 points. The fighters and fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance
in North and West Po Valley attack motor transport, road bridges,
and numerous targets in support of United States Fifth Army,
elements of which cross the Po River.
Fifteenth Air Force. 719 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers attack bridges over Brenta and Adige Rivers at Bonavigo,
Zevio, Albaredo d'Adige, Legnano (2), Badia, Padua (3), and
Cavarzere and hit supply dump at Peschiera del Garda. 165
P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers on
armed reconnaissance of Northeast Italy bomb and strafe rail
and road bridges, highways, trains and vehicles, and other
targets. Other P-38 Lightning fighters fly reconnaissance.
Other P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers escort reconnaissance flights
and Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF) B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers missions against targets in North Italy.
Tenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-61 Black Widow, night fighters
attack with napalm, rockets, and cannon several targets during
sweeps from Laihka to Loilem to Hopong to Wan Yin. Laihka
airfields, bridge South of Wan Yin, trucks, and other targets
are successfully pounded. 40 fighter-bombers attack troop
concentrations along and behind lines at several points including
Loilem, Nawng Leng, Mong Pawn, and Naungtaw. Bridge at Namhkok
is temporarily out due to bomb damage to approaches. 570 transport
sorties are flown to forward areas throughout the day.
Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast Hsuchang railroad yards,
completely demolishing a locomotive repair shop. 2 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers attack targets in South China Sea. 39 P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers attack troops, horses,
trains, and river craft at or near Taiku, Shanhsien, Nanyang,
Hsihhsiassuchi, Loning, Sinyang, Chenghsien, Sichuan, Lushan,
and along Pinghan railroad, and render a railroad tunnel near
Sinyang unusable.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Shinei railroad yards. P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers hit Karenko airfield and P-38 Lightning
fighters attack various targets. Fighter-bombers continue
to support ground forces in North and South parts of Luzon
pounding numerous artillery positions, supply areas, and general
targets. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb military depot
at Shanghai and shipping in Yulin harbour on Hainan Island.
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's also hit Hainan and Woody
Islands. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb naval base at Saigon.
Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Sepinggang
and Jesselton. P-38 Lightning fighters drop napalm on Tarakan
Island targets. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly shipping
sweep over Makassar Strait and damage several small vessels.
Seventh Air Force. First element of Seventh Air Force, a detachment
of 28th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, arrives on Okinawa.
13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam pound positions
at Marcus.
