fighters sorties, bomb Sterkrade Holten synthetic oil plant,
Rheine marshalling yard, Dinslaken, Osnabruck, and targets.
2 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups fly area sweeps 1 in
escort to Ninth Air Force medium bombers.
Ninth Air Force. 304 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers,
and A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb marshalling yard, railhead,
and road and rail bridges in Germany with aim of obstructing
troop movement. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, fly armed
reconnaissance and sweeps and Air Force cover, and support
United States 7 Armoured Division near Montfort, III, VIII,
and XII Corps from South of Saint-Vith along battle front
to North West of Echternach, and 4th, 5th, 94th, and 95th
Infantry Divisions from Echternach South to just West of Saarlautern.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers score damaging hits at Rovereto, San
Michele all' Adige and on Dogna bridge, and attack Chiari
and Crema bridges with fair results. Fighter-bombers range
over practically all of North Italy destroying and damaging
large number of vehicles and railway cars and several locomotives,
also hitting fuel and ammunition dumps around Mantua.
Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather limits operations to 1 P-38
Lightning fighters weather reconnaissance flight.
Tenth Air Force. 46 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support ground forces near Si-U, Namhkam,
and along the Irrawaddy near Twinnge, Bahe, Nam Mit River,
Myitson, and Banwe. 12 others hit targets along roads near
Kutkai, Hsenwi, Lashio, and Namtu. Troop concentrations, fuel
and ammunition dumps, vehicles, and general supplies are pounded
at Kin, Padan, Man Lom, Namtu, Hkamtung, Kabaing, Nammaw-hpek,
Panglaw, and Na-hsang. Transports fly 449 sorties to advanced
bases and front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance
attack various targets in Wanting area and in South West China.
10 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers bomb buildings at Kunlong
ferry. 14 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-40 fighters hit
Sintsiang railroad yards and destroy several locomotives and
trucks East of Tsinan and Suchow.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters,
bomb Heito airfield in first major Fifth Air Force strike
on Formosa. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb barracks
in the Cabaruan Hills and gun positions across Manila Bay
and hit Fabrica airfield. In smaller miscellaneous strikes,
Far East Air Force (FEAF) fighters and bombers over Central
and South Luzon hit enemy positions, small shipping, and highways
at several points, and damage bridge over Magata River.
Seventh Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam blast airfields at
Iwo Jima, while 8 more B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flying
individual strikes from Guam pound the airfields again during
