Neuss. A P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers Continent based group
flies uneventful sweep over Neuss area.
Ninth Air Force. A small United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers force hits troop concentrations,
road bridge, and military transport targets at Blankenheim,
Dasburg, and Arzfeld. Fighters fly armed reconnaissance, alert
flights, and patrols, and support United States III, VIII,
and XII Corps and 4th, 94th, and 95th Infantry Divisions from
South of Saint-Vith, South and East along the battle line
to just West of Saarlautern.
Twelfth Air Force. During
22-23
January 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc
light bombers bomb lights, roads, and river crossings at over
50 locations in Po Valley, hit several targets, and attack
Borgoforte and San Benedetto Po and airfields at Villafranca
di Verona and Ghedi. Weather cancels medium bombers operations
during the day. Fighter-bombers operate mainly against command,
principally railroad targets, in Po Valley but also hit ammunition
dumps, shipping, guns, vehicles, and other targets in North
Italy scattered from Genoa to Northeast Italy.
Fifteenth Air Force. Continued bad weather cancels all operations.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Aungban and Hsumhsai.
34 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support ground forces near Namhkam
and along the Irrawaddy in the Twinnge and Bahe areas. 55
P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters hit
troop concentrations, storage areas and vehicles at Kawngwang,
Sati, Kyaukme, Wengnan, Hko-lawng, Lothke, and Panglaw. Transports
fly 542 sorties, carrying men and supplies to advanced bases
and drop supplies to troops in front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance
attack targets mainly river, road, and rail traffic at several
locations in both South China and in North China plain, including
Wanting Suchow and Yuankiang areas, lower Tungting Lake region,
points between Kiaotow and Kweiyi, and points as far North
as Peking.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). On
22-23
January 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers again hit Formosa in force, bombing aluminium
factory at Takao. In the day's principal missions, B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Baguio and, along with A-20 Havoc light
bombers, hit Corregidor Island. Other A-20 Havoc light bombers
attack Aparri airfield while fighter-bombers hit bridge at
Digdig, luggers South of Alcala, guns on Grande Island, bridge
over Magata River, and base at Camp John Hay. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers hit Silay airfield.
Twentieth Air Force. 28 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's of XXI Bomber Command bomb
Mitsubishi engine plant at Nagoya. 27 hit secondary target,
the urban area of the city. 9 bomb other alternates and targets.
An estimated 600 fighters offer heavy and aggressive opposition
but down only 1 very heavy bomber. United States gunners claim
32 fighters downed.
Seventh Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Saipan bomb Iwo Jima airfields.
3 from Guam fly armed reconnaissance over Woleai, 2 of them
bombing the main runway on the island. During 23-
24
January 1945, 10 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Saipan
strike Iwo Jima singly at about 45 minute intervals.
Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies reconnaissance sortie along
Onnekotan Matsuwa East coasts. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
strike Kakumabetsu cannery and targets on Paramushiru. 810
fighters intercept and the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers claim
2 victories. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers is lost.
