Eighth Air Force. 1,359 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers attack rail facilities and command targets in
conjunction with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and Ninth
Air Force which attack similar objectives including over 20
marshalling yards and a total of about 40 targets altogether,
in North and Central Germany. Fighter participation, including
escort, strafing sweeps, and weather scouting, amounts to
822 effective sorties. Fifteenth Air Force simultaneously
hits targets further South.
Ninth Air Force. Ninth Air Force joins other United States
Army Air Force (USAAF) in European Theatre of Operations (ETO)
and Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO), along with
The British Royal Air Force (RAF), in Operation CLARION with
objective of paralysing the already decimated German railway
system. 450 A-20 Havoc light bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers,
and B-26 Marauder medium bombers of the 9th Bomber Division
bomb South West German targets including 46 rail bridges,
12 marshalling yards, 11 stations, plus junctions, roundhouses,
viaduct, crossing, workshop. CLARION marks first low-level
operations by medium bombers since May 1943. Over 1,000 fighters
of IX, XIX, and XXIX Tactical Air Commands escort the medium
bombers and light bombers, attack several assigned ground
targets, fly armed reconnaissance, and co-operate with United
States VIII, XII, and XX Corps along Prum River and in Saar
Mosel Triangle.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers during
21-22
February 1945, attack ammunition dump, railroad bridges and
lines, and road lights in Po Valley. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb railroad bridges and marshalling yards at Lavis,
Bressanone, and Ala, cutting the bridge at Lavis and the through
tracks at Ala marshalling yard. Fighters and fighter-bombers
continue to support United States Fifth Army forces South
and South West of Bologna and hit command targets, dumps,
vehicles, and guns in and North of battle area in Apennines
and in Po Valley, and bomb airfields at Ghedi and Bergamo.
Fifteenth Air Force. The Fifteenth's participation in Operation
CLARION includes over 350 heavy bombers bombing 50 separate
command targets in Germany, Austria, and Italy, including
some 25 marshalling yards and numerous railroad lines and
bridges. Fighters fly over 300 escort and strafing sorties.
Tenth Air Force. 29 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support ground forces in Namhsam area.
11 closely support forces in Mongmit sector. About 100 fighter-bombers
attack troop concentrations, gun positions, supply points,
trucks, and animal transport in battle areas and behind enemy
lines. Transports complete over 600 sorties to forward areas
throughout the day.
Fourteenth Air Force. 19 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighter-bombers hit villages, tanks, and trucks from Hsiangcheng
to Hsuchang, attack railroad traffic around Sinsiang and Linfen,
hit river craft, trucks, and troops in Chiuchiang area, and
claim 1 freighter sunk on the Yangtze between Hankow and Nanking.
A single B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attacks convoys in Siang
Chiang Valley near Hengyang.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). 100 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit troop concentrations
North West of Fort Stotsenburg. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
pound Corregidor. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit concentrations
at Pugo, South West of Baguio, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb supply areas North and West of Baguio while P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers hit Angin and Marikina. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Tarakan and Labuan airfields.
Seventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance from
Guam bomb airfields on Marcus. During 22-
23
February 1945, 6 heavy bombers fly individual harassment strikes
against Susaki airfield and town of Okimura.
