Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. As a follow-up to the previous day's attacks on transportation facilities, 1,193 heavy bombers strike 10 marshalling yards and numerous targets, mostly rail command, in Central Germany. Fighters fly over 600 effective escort and strafing sorties.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division hits command centres East of Roer River as United States Ninth Army crosses the river and begins assault, Operation GRENADE toward the Rhine. Fighters fly armed reconnaissance, patrols, and alerts and support United States 104th and 8th Infantry Divisions near Duren, XIII and XIX Corps' attack across the Roer at Linnich and Rurdorf, and VIII, XII, and XX Corps at Prum River, East of Our River, and East of Saar River.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers on intruder missions during 22-23 February 1945, hit marshalling yards and airfields throughout North Italy. Medium bombers concentrate on North end of Brenner Pass, damaging bridges at Campo San Pietro and railroad fill at San Felice del Benaco and hitting bridges at Dogna. Fighter-bombers pound airfields, and enemy movement in Central and North Po Valley, and damage 6 bridges and cut rail lines at numerous points.

Fifteenth Air Force. Approximately 380 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit marshalling yards at Villach, Worgl, Knittelfeld, Klagenfurt and Udine, plus Kitzbuhel railroad junction. 140 P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers provide escort. Some of the fighters strafe areas North West of Linz and North of Munich. 35 other P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb Worgl marshalling yard and afterwards 30 of them strafe rail me Rosenheim, Innsbruck, Landeck. Other P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance and escort missions.

Tenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support ground forces in Mongmit sector and near Lashio, hitting Japanese concentration. 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 120 fighter-bombers continue pounding troop concentrations, supply areas, road traffic, and ammunition dumps in front line areas and behind enemy lines. Large transport effort completes 655 sorties.

Fourteenth Air Force. 29 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 22 fighters scheduled to attack Shihkiachwang abort because of bad weather. 8 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers hit railroad targets near Siaokan and attack river traffic from Nanking to Hankow. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers sweep Gulf of Tonkin and South China Sea, damaging 1 vessel. 4 P-40 fighters attack targets in Kaifeng area.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) strikes supporting ground forces continue throughout battle zones on Luzon. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit Jesselton airfield while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Sandakan, Lahat Datu, and Miri airfields. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on shipping sweeps bomb vessels in Phan Rang harbour and hit small convoy South West of Camranh Bay.

Seventh Air Force. 26 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bomb San Roque airfield. 2 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Saipan on armed reconnaissance strafe Pagan. On 23-24 February 1945, 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam fly snooper raids against airfield on Chichi Jima and town of Okimura on Haha Jima. Marines raise United States flag on summit of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.

Zone of Interior. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters from Santa Rosa Army Air Field shoots down Japanese balloon over Calistoga.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Waltham Holy Cross.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Chigwell.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dagenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Chigwell.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Sevenoaks.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Cheshunt.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Folkestone.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Epping.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Blackmore.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Cold Norton.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Chelmsford.
