Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 1,200 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack tank plant, main railroad station, marshalling yards and locomotive shops at Nurnberg, and 13 targets in the area. 12 fighters groups fly escort and 10 of them later strafe ground targets. 2 other groups escort Ninth Air Force medium bombers while another group strafes targets in Meiningen, Coburg, and Nurnberg areas.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division hits rail overpass and bridges, oil storage depot, marshalling yards, command centres, and 13 targets in Germany. Over 1,100 fighters sorties are completed as IX, XIX, and XXIX Tactical Air Commands escort 9th Bomber Division, attack railroads, airfield, and other selected targets, fly armed reconnaissance over wide areas of Germany including United States First Army area between Duren and Losheim, and support VIII, XII, and XX Corps along Prum River, the West wall, and in Saar Mosel triangle.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) night fighters and A-20 Havoc light bombers on intruder missions during 20-21 February 1945, continue to attack command and supplies in Po Valley. Medium bombers, during the day, bomb bridges at Dogna, Crema, and Romano di Lombardia. Fighter-bombers devote their main effort to close support of ground forces along West and Central United States Fifth Army front, and also hit command to the North of the battle line and in the Po Valley.

Fifteenth Air Force. During 20-21 February 1945, 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drop supplies in North Italy. During the day over 500 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers with fighters escorts bomb Vienna railroad targets Central yards, South station, and Matzleinsdorf marshalling yard, marshalling yards at Bruck an der Mur, Wiener Neustadt, Zeltweg, and Sopron, and shipyards at Trieste and Fiume.

Tenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters provide close support for ground forces in Namhsan area. 15 support ground forces in Mongmit sector. 100 fighter-bombers strike supply and troop concentrations and make offensive sweeps of roads along battle line areas. Transports continue to land men and supplies at forward bases and drop supplies to front line troops.

Fourteenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, supported by 12 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, pound Taiyuan. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 12 P-40 fighters hit Yoyang. About 100 fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance attack troops, trucks, horses, railroad targets, river shipping, and other targets at many locations throughout South and East China.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Japanese positions in hills West of Fort Stotsenburg. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters pound Corregidor and strafe Bagae Pilar road and P-40 fighters support ground forces at Marikina, San Mateo, and on Corregidor. Basco is hit by B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and P-38 Lightning fighters. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kudat and Sandakan airfields while A-20 Havoc light bombers attack Jesselton airfield and town.

Seventh Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Saipan hit Pagan with napalm. P-38 Lightning fighters from Guam escort photo aeroplanes over Truk and strafe aircraft on Moen and wharf on Falas Island. 3 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance flight bomb airfields on Marcus. During 21-22 February 1945, 6 heavy bombers fly individual snooper raids from Guam against Chichi Jima.

The last V-2 rocket was launched from Peenemünde.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Sidcup.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Beckenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit South Ockendon.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.
