Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 850 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers bomb main station and marshalling yard at Nurnberg, plus 14 targets. Thick cloud en route to target forces about 400 other heavy bombers to abort. Fighters fly 438 effective support sorties. About half of the escort strafes ground targets. 4 other groups strafe rail and road targets in Nurnberg and Straubing areas.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) IX Engineer Command is relieved of its assignment to Ninth Air Force and assigned to United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe (USSTAF). (After V-E the command will revert to control of the Ninth.) Weather grounds 9th Bomber Division. Fighters fly armed reconnaissance East and West of Rhine River, attack bridge and defended area, and support United States VIII, XII, and XX Corps in Lichtenborn area, West of Prum River, and in Saar Mosel triangle.

Twelfth Air Force. Twelfth Air Force loses more units to European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA) as 2 fighters groups 27th and 86th and an air service group are transferred to First Tactical Air Force (Provisional). A-20 Havoc light bombers on night intruder missions during 19-20 February 1945, bomb targets at over 30 points in Central Po Valley, several rail diversions, and marshalling yards at Villafranca in Lunigiana, Roncanova, Bovolone, Cerea, Legnago, Cittadella, Casa di David, Isola della Scala, Castelfranco Veneto, and Nogara. Fighter-bombers devote main effort to support United States Fifth Army offensive in Monte Torraccia area. Medium bombers bomb bridges at Montebello, Chiusaforte, Salzano, and Calcinato.

Fifteenth Air Force. 520 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with fighters escort, and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Lobau and Schwechat oil refineries and Vienna, Floridsdorf marshalling yard, steel works at Kapfenberg, harbour at Pula, and shipyards at Trieste and Fiume.

Tenth Air Force. 44 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters fly close support strikes in Mongmit battle sector. 8 support ground forces in Namhsan area. 13 P-38 Lightning fighters severely damage bridge at Mong Long. Nearly 100 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters pound troop concentrations, supply and ammunition dumps, and general targets behind enemy lines. Large-scale transport operations continue.

Fourteenth Air Force. 34 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers pound locomotives, railroad cars, and other targets at Tsingtao and Puchi. About 30 other fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance hit targets mainly rail and river traffic at scattered locations including Changsha, Lohochai, Tsingtao, Chukiatsi, North of Lingling, and between Siangsiang and Siangtan.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb runways and warehouse at Jesselton airfield. Buildings at Puerto Princesa and underground installation on Corregidor are pounded. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighters over Formosa thoroughly blast town of Choshu, and also hit railroad yards, vehicles, railway rolling stock, and buildings.

Seventh Air Force. 2 Guam based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance flight bomb Marcus. During 20-21 February 1945, 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flying individual raids, bomb town of Okimura and airfield on Chichi Jima.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Greenwich.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Poplar.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Mundon.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Earl Stonham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Upminster.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Rainham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Waltham Holy Cross.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Highwood.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Woolwich.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Romford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Chingford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Foulness Island.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Barking.
