Events On This Day

Germany is divided between the Allied occupation forces.

Fourteenth Air Force. A few United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb bridge and ferry terminal at Chungmow and near Kaifeng. 4 escorting P-47 Thunderbolt fighters strafe Kaifeng airfield and locomotives in the area. 4 other P-47 Thunderbolt fighters bomb railroad yards at Yuhsiang. 4 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers knock out bridge East of Kiehsiu. On this date Chinese forces capture Liuchow.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound defences at Balikpapan as Australian forces make amphibious landings. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and P-38 Lightning fighters hit airfields at Oelin, Tabanio, and Trombol, and bomb Tawau area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Limboeng and Mandai airstrips. Fighter-bombers hit troops and gun positions in Kayan Tadian area.

Twentieth Air Force. 530 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's carry out incendiary attacks on Ube, Kure, Shimonoseki, and Kumamoto. During 12 July 1945, 24 other B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's mine Shimonoseki Strait and waters at Nanao and Fushiki.

Seventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam bomb building concentration on Marcus. 33 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, operating in two flights from Okinawa, bomb Chiran airfield on Kyushu. 2 others hit Yaku Island.

VII Fighter Command. 84 Iwo Jima based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighters hit targets at Kasumigaura, Itami. Hamamatsu, and Nagano.

Zone of Interior. Headquarters, Weather Wing is redesignated Headquarters, Army Air Force Weather Service.
