Eighth Air Force. More than 100 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers supported by 3
fighters groups bomb Kaiserslautern marshalling yard. Most
of the heavy bombers are diverted, after bombing, to bases
on Continent because of heavy clouds.
Ninth Air Force. IX Tactical Air Command returns to operational
control of Ninth Air Force (from Second Tactical Air Force)
as United States First Army returns from 21st Army Group to
12th Army Group. IX Tactical Air Command Headquarters (Rear)
returns to Verviers from Charleroi. Weather prevents all Ninth
Air Force operations except for alert flights by 11 fighters
of IX and XXIX Tactical Air Commands.
Twelfth Air Force. During
17-18
January 1945, A-20 Havoc light bombers attack Po River crossings,
lights and movement throughout Po Valley. During the day medium
bombers pound targets on the Brenner line, including temporary
bridge between San Michele all'Adige and Ora, and overhanging
cliff over railroad at San Ambrogio di Valpolicella. Fighters
and fighter-bombers blast command lines in Northeast Italy
and fuel and supply dumps in Piacenza area, destroying numerous
railroad tracks, trains, and vehicles, and causing explosions
or fires in most of the dumps.
Fifteenth Air Force. Weather prevents bombing operations.
P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly
photo reconnaissance and escort missions.
Tenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters hit Anisakan
and Hsumhsai airfields. 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb
airfields at Nawnghkio. 20 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support
ground forces at Si-U and near Yenya-u and Mahlainggon. Troops,
supplies, and general targets are attacked at Antawsai, Mong
Nak, Namhpakka, Mong Yok, Loi-pyek, Kyawnghkam, Pangnok, and
in Namtu vicinity. 529 transport sorties are flown to forward
areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 29 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Hong Kong. 7 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb Ishan and Chinchengchiang, 4 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and 12 P-40 fighters hit shipping in Puchi
area, 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb town of Wanting,
and 2 hit troop compounds at Chaling. 11 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers and 12 fighter-bombers attack Phu Lang Thuong. 25
P-40 fighters pound shipping and railroad targets at Hong
Kong. About 140 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, P-40 fighters,
and P-38 Lightning fighters on armed reconnaissance over South
China from Burma boundary to Hong Kong attack a huge variety
of targets.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast Cotabato area. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb targets in Miti area, B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers hit troop concentrations at Bamban, A-20 Havoc light
bombers hit warehouses and highway traffic North of Bataan,
and P-38 Lightning fighters strafe parked aeroplanes at Tuguegarao
and vehicles at Enrile, Calarian, and Butigui. A variety of
Far East Air Force (FEAF) aircraft fly small-scale raids and
armed reconnaissance missions against road and rail targets,
bridges, airfields, and numerous targets throughout the Philippine
Islands.
Seventh Air Force. 19 Saipan based United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb targets on
Chichi Jima and Haha Jima, damaging naval base and town of
Okimura. 10 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam pound airfield
on Iwo Jima. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers during 18-
19
January 1945, continue snooper strikes against Iwo Jima airfields.
Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly unsuccessful reconnaissance
to Kurabu airfield. One of the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
force lands in USSR on return trip.
