Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 1,309 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers strike Swinemunde area and 7 marshalling yards at Friedberg, Wetzlar, Marburg Lahn, Siegen, Frankfurt Main, Betzdorf, and Dillenburg. 523 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers sorties are flown in support of heavy bombers.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th Bomber Division medium bombers and light bombers attack 8 marshalling yards, ammunition filling plant, city areas and targets. Attacks on marshalling yards are aimed at blocking troop movements by rail into Ruhr and Remagen areas. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, bomb special targets, fly armed reconnaissance, cover Remagen area, and support United States 9th Infantry Division in Kalenborn and Hargarten areas and XX Corps in Saarburg bridgehead area.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit 7 railroad bridges, cutting two, and fills severely damaging one and a train in Brenner area and in Northeast Italy as far East as Yugoslav border area. Fighter-bombers blast command in North Italy, making 36 rail cuts, 19 of them on the Brenner line. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters also bomb and severely damage a munitions factory North West of Zagreb. During 11-12 March 1945, light bombers on intruder missions hit Po crossings, sugar refinery, vehicles, and trains.

Fifteenth Air Force. 790 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Vienna, Floridsdorf oil refinery and alternate targets of Graz, Zeltweg, and Wiener Neustadt marshalling yards. 98 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Knittelfeld railroad bridge 2 others hit nearby targets and strafe command in Wiener Neustadt, Graz, Klagenfurt areas. 12 P-38 Lightning fighters sweep Zagreb area. Bad weather forces 60 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers sent against Austrian command to abort. Supply mission to Yugoslavia and reconnaissance operations are successful.

Tenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 35 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit troop concentrations, supplies, vehicles, and antiaircraft guns along battlefront and behind enemy lines. 66 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit transportation targets and a bridge during several road sweeps in Central Burma. 12 others damage bypass bridge at Hay-ti. Transports complete 677 sorties delivering men and supplies to advanced bases and dropping supplies to front line forces.

Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers knock out Song Rang bridge. 6 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers hit road command at Hwayuan and bomb a building at Ha Coi.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Mercedes and Malabang. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Japanese troops near Ipo. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit supply area at Bangued and troops at Pattao. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers fly ground forces support missions throughout Luzon. Fighter-bombers also bomb Calallo Island. On Formosa B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters support bomb Takao Tainan. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers also hit Tainan and bomb Jitsugetsu power plants.

Twentieth Air Force. 44 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit oil storage facilities on Bukum Island, Samboe, and Sebarok Islands. 1 other very heavy bomber bombs Arang Hill. Results are poor.

Seventh Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers bomb and strafe Okimura. 13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly daylight strike against Susaki airfield. During 12-13 March 1945, 8 heavy bombers hit Susaki and Okimura. 24 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur hit Sarangani Bay storage area.

Eleventh Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kurabu airfield area. 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers weather abort a mission to Hayakegawa.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Upminster.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Greenstead.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Clacton.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Sidcup.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Sidcup.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Little Warley.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Hainault Forest.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Hornchurch.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Woolwich.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Althorne.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Thames Estuary.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Lower Kirby.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Epping.
