Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Kriegsmarine U-boat yards at Kiel and Bremen and shipyard and refinery area at Hamburg are bombed by 1,212 heavy bombers. Close escort is provided by 14 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups while 1 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters group flies area support in Kiel area.

Ninth Air Force. 696 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers, hit 4 airfields, 3 command centres, 2 ammunition filling plants, and several city areas and other casual targets. Attacks are to obstruct air operations and supply and troop movements in general. Fighters fly patrols and armed reconnaissance, escort 9th Bomber Division, support United States 9th Infantry Division push at Remagen bridgehead and fly cover over the area, and support XX Corps East of Trier and Saarburg.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers of 57th Bomber Wing score damaging hits on bridge and fills at San Michele all'Adige, Volargne, and Ossenigo, and, attacking target in Austria for first time, bomb bridge at Drauburg. Fighters and fighter-bombers of XXII Tactical Air Command hit rail lines and dumps in Central Po Valley and in Brenner area. During 10-11 March 1945, light bombers hit several Po River crossings, Ghedi and Pavia airfields, road junctions, and other targets in Po Valley.

Fifteenth Air Force. Bad weather limits operations to reconnaissance and supply missions.

Tenth Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound stores, troops, vehicles, and ammunition dumps at Konghsa, Kwai-Kong, Man Kat, and Mong Yai. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters knock out bridge at Mong Tong. 8 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit troop concentration at Kyaukme. 30 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit targets during road sweeps behind enemy lines. Transports fly 547 sorties to forward areas.

Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers knock out 1 bridge and hit numerous boxcars at Kep and near Don Met. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over South China Sea and Gulf of Tonkin claim 1 freighter sunk and another damaged. 10 P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers blast locomotives on Tsinpu railroad and demolish 3 villages East of Lohochai.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Zamboanga area, Mercedes village, and San Roque airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Mercedes, support ground forces near Zamboanga, and in conjunction with torpedo boats, hit Isabela, Barlak, Taluksangay, and Headquarters North of Zamboanga. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Aparri area and support ground forces at Wawa. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers fly ground support missions and attack supply dumps and numerous targets throughout Luzon. Fighter-bombers hit Takao and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mako.

Twentieth Air Force. Attacking at altitudes ranging from 5,100 to 8,500 ft, 285 B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb Nagoya urban area with incendiaries during 11-12 March 1945.

Seventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam again hit Susaki airfield, while 8 more during 11-12 March 1945, pound the airfield individually. Iwo Jima based P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers also bomb Susaki and strafe Okimura and Kitamura.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Mouth of River Crouch.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit West Ham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Westerham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Deptford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Canvey Island.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Bulphan.
