command centre, 2 city areas, miscellaneous targets in Koblenz,
Braubach area, and a target. Fighters escort medium bombers
and light bombers, attack ground targets, fly patrols, armed
reconnaissance, and provide cover and ground support over
Remagen bridge area where United States 9th Infantry Division
expands bridgehead against fierce opposition, support 4th
Armoured Division in Koblenz area and XX Corps in Saarburg
area, and co-operate with XVI Corps near Wesel.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light
bombers bomb bridges and other command targets in East Po
Valley during
9-10
March 1945. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb bridges at Ora,
Bozzolo, and San Michele all'Adige, and railroad fill at Ceraino
railroad station. Fighters and fighter-bombers hit command
and targets at various locations in East Po Valley, including
several bridges, and numerous ammunition dumps and vehicles.
Fifteenth Air Force. 191 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers hit Verona Parona di Valpolicella railroad bridge.
1 other bombs Voghera marshalling yard. Supply missions to
Yugoslavia and reconnaissance operations continue.
Tenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support forces of British 36th Division
in Mogok area. 46 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and P-38 Lightning
fighters sweep roads South of bomb line. 49 others hit supply
areas behind enemy lines, attack a bivouac near Nam-yang,
and bomb a truck park North of Mong Yai. 537 air supply sorties
are flown to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 32 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers blast railroad yards at Tsanghsien
and Tehsien. 10 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 4 P-40 fighters
attack Siangtan and nearby targets. 60 fighter-bombers hit
river, road, and railroad targets, gun positions, warehouses,
airstrips, and troops around Sinyang, Yiyang, Changsha, Kiyang,
Yoyang Hengyang, Hankow, and Wuchang.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
over Zamboanga Peninsula area bomb town of Zamboanga, Calarian
airfield, Pangasahan, Port Holland, Kulibato Point, and Sibago
Island. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Ipo area and Aparri
airfield. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light
bombers support guerrillas near San Fernando and bomb Cabugao.
Fighter-bombers hit Caballo Island, bomb town of Minanga,
hit enemy concentrations at Burgos, near Fort Stotsenburg,
in Batangas province, and at other locations on Luzon, and
attack Teresa. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kudat and
Jesselton airfields.
Twentieth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb marshalling yard at
Kuala Lumpur. 1 of the very heavy bombers drops over half
of its bombs at Alor Star airfield. 3 others attack Khao Huakhang,
and freighter in channel leading to Port Swettenham. During
the predawn hours 279 B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's, of
325 airborne, blast Tokyo urban area with incendiaries, destroying
more than 267,000 buildings about one fourth in the city and
killing more than 83,000 people. This death total is the highest
of any single day's action during the war, exceeding the deaths
caused by the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. 20 other B-29
Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb alternates and targets.
14 very heavy bombers are lost. The participating B-29 Superfortress
heavy bomber's are from the XXI Bomber Command's Bomber Wings,
the 73d, 313th, and 314th, based on Guam, Tinian, and Saipan.
The raids are flown at levels ranging from 4,900 to 9,200
ft.

B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam hit Susaki airfield
which 9 heavy bombers again hit during 10-

March 1945, on separate snooper strikes. 23 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers from Angaur bomb Calarian airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers radar bomb targets on Kataoka,
Suribachi, and Kakumabetsu with unobserved results. l fighters
is sighted but no attack is made. 2 other B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers on this mission abort due to weather and mechanical
trouble. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers missions to Hayakegawa
and Paramushiru are also cancelled due to weather.
